  • Annual Meeting of Members: January 23, 2015

    Dragi kolege,
    Pozivamo vas na godišnju skupštinu AMCA-e Toronto koja ce se održati u petak 23. sijecnja 2015. u 7:30 navecer u Baka Gallery Café-u na 2256 Bloor Street West u Torontu.

    Na skupštini cemo cuti i prodiskutirati izvještaje o radu u protekloj godini, prodiskutirati prijedloge o izmjenama statuta i povecanju clanarina, izabrati nove clanove upravnog odbora te prodiskutirati nove ideje o aktivnostima za sljedecu godinu.

    Sve clanove koji još nisu podmirili clanarine za 2014. molimo da to ucine. Samo clanovi s placenom clanarinom imaju pravo glasa. Buduci da UO predlaže povecanje clanarina, kojeg nije bilo vec dugi niz godina, za 2015., svi oni koji plate clanarinu prije izglasavanja povecanja ce platiti prema starim cijenama.

    Htio bih reci nekoliko rijeci o stanju naše udruge i radu u 2014. U ovoj godini AMCA je organizirala pet iznimno interesantnih predavanja, a na godišnjoj gala veceri u prestižnom Boulevard Club-u, glavni govornik je bio Victor Dodig, izvršni predsjednik velike kanadske banke CIBC. Pored drugih zbivanja, sastanaka AMCA Book Club-a, šetnji AMCA Hiking Club-a, organizirani su obrazovni izlet autobusom u Midland, Penetanguishene i Orilliu, proljetna vecera, Prva revija suvremenog hrvatskog filma, Božicni domjenak te je poslata znacajna financijska pomoc nastradalima od poplava u Slavoniji. Uza sve to, sagradili smo i novi website.

    U protekloj godini dodijelili smo dvije stipendije i dvije financijske pomoci studentima iz Kanade i Hrvatske, a inicijativa AMCA-e Toronto da se na University of Toronto uvrsti i treci kolegij, Mediterranean Cities of Croatia, u okviru programa hrvatskih studija, je urodila plodom. Ovaj treci kolegij su financirali Ministarstvo znanosti, obrazovanja i sporta Republike Hrvatske i AMCA Toronto, uz asistenciju Kanadsko hrvatske gospodarske komore. Sva tri kolegija ce predavati clan AMCA-e Toronto Prof. Davor Piskac.

    AMCA Toronto je, po pisanju rektorata Sveucilišta u Zagrebu, najveca i najaktivnija udruga takve vrste izvan Hrvatske, a po mnogima, je postala centar intelektualnog života Hrvata južnog Ontarija. AMCA je danas jaka priznata i jasno profilirana udruga s 181 registriranim clanom, medju kojima su dva akademika, šest sveucilišnih profesora, jedanaest doktora znanosti, konzulica Republike Hrvatske, jedan sudac te veliki broj uspješnih lijecnika, inženjera, odvjetnika, umjetnika i drugih profesionalaca. Kako je i broj clanova i kvaliteta aktivnosti u porastu, što prati i zdrava financijska politika, možemo sa sigurnošcu reci
    da je pred našom udrugom još svjetlija buducnost.

  • AMCA Toronto Scholarship 2014

    It is my pleasure to announce that, due to the large number of highly qualified applicants this year, AMCA Toronto Board of Directors has decided to award two $500 bursaries, in addition to the two $1,000 scholarships. The recipients are as follows:

    Mihael Plut, Vivodina, Croatia
    Mihael completed his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture at the University of Zagreb. He prepared his graduation thesis at the Institute of Applied and Theoretical Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Czech Republic. He has been accepted to the Erasmus Mundus program with a double degree in Wind Physics at the DTU Copenhagen, Denmark and at the Universität von Oldenburg, Germany.

    Aleksandra Srša Benko, Newmarket, Ontario
    Aleksandra, after completing her studies of French and Spanish languages and literature, obtained her master’s degree at the University of Zagreb with high GPA. Currently she is a student of the second year of doctoral studies in Linguistics at the University of Zagreb. She speaks fluently seven languages and has presented her works at various congresses and seminars, including the 60th Anniversary of Croatian Academy of America.

    RECIPIENTS OF BURSARIES

    Catherine Klostrenac, Unionville, Ontario
    Catherine is a third year student at Ryerson University working towards an undergraduate degree in Business Management majoring in Marketing and minoring in Entrepreneurship and Strategy. Within the university she is heavily involved in extracurricular student groups and currently holds the title of President of Real Estate Ryerson. From grade 10 until her second year of university, she maintained two part time jobs.

    Filip Rupčić-Polgar, Zagreb, Croatia
    Filip is a student of the third year of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of Zagreb. He is a two time Dean Award winner. In addition to his volunteer work, this summer he is attending professional development courses at the Institute of Seismic Engineering at the University of Saint Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, Macedonia.

    Congratulations to the recipients and we wish them continued success in their future endeavors. We invite all those who did not receive a scholarship this year, to apply again in 2015.

  • One-day Excursion to Simcoe County

    Dear Colleagues and Friends of AMCA Toronto!

    It is our pleasure to announce that this spring AMCA Toronto is organizing a one-day excursion to Simcoe County on Saturday, May 10, 2014. to visit the three historic picturesque towns: Midland, Penetanguishene, and Orillia of the Ontario colonial heritage.

    The price for the bus, including car parking, is $25 for AMCA members, $20 for students and AMCA Youth, and $35 for non-members.

    This trip will end with optional group dinner in Orillia at Lake Country Grill.

    Trip to Simcoe County ITINERARY

    9:00 AM – Leaving from the parking lot of the Church of Croatian Martyrs at 4605 Mississauga Rd., (south of Eglinton Ave. W.) Mississauga. Please, arrive by 8:45 AM at the latest!!!

    9:30 AM – A brief stopover to pick-up the remaining passengers from the parking lot at Hwy 400/ King Rd. (car pool parking).*

    9:45 AM – Bus ride towards Midland via Barrie.

    10:45 AM – Arrival to Midland, including visit to the Martyrs’ Shrine.

    11:30 AM – Bus ride to visit a nearby historic site, the Jesuit mission of Sainte-Marie among the Hurons.

    12:30 PM – Bus ride back to Midland for Lunch break. Bring your own or visit one of the local spots.

    2:00 PM
    – A brief ride to Penetanguishene. Tour of the local attractions.

    3:00 PM – Bus ride to Orillia, including a brief stopover by the Wye Marsh.

    4:30 PM – Arrival to Orillia. Tour of the local attractions.

    5:30 PM – Boarding. Bus ride to a local restaurant for Group Dinner.

    5:45 PM – Group Dinner at Lake Country Grill.

    7:00 PM – Boarding and return ride to Mississauga (with a brief stopover at Hwy 400/King Rd. for passenger drop-off).

    9:30 PM – Arrive to the parking lot of the Church of Croatian Martyrs, Mississauga.

    * Passengers who prefer pickup from the parking lot at Hwy 400/ King Rd. (car pool parking), please indicate this at the time of reservation.
